BLISTERS FOR SISTERS TM

Run a marathon or half marathon to benefit
Dominican Sisters Home Health Agency of Denver

It is no secret that the cost of healthcare goes up no matter what the state of the economy, and this year will be no different. While the cost of healthcare provided to our patients hasn't gone up - it's still FREE - the cost for us to provide that care has gone up.

2008 was the first year Dominican Sisters Home Health Agency was blessed with the opportunity to raise funds through the efforts of five of our staunchest supporters - each who believes in what we do - enough so that they were willing to run a marathon (26.2 miles) to support the care that we give! Blisters for Sisters was born.

Even more amazing: many approached the team members and stepped up to say: "I'll do that with you next year!" In 2009, Blisters for Sisters had another successful year with a 300% increase in runners and most of them will be returning to run for us again in 2010! 15 of our list of 17 runners made it to the starting line, so far, and 100% of those finished their race! Our youngest runner was 18 and ran her first half marathon; our oldest runner was 72 and ran a whole marathon – and they both want to do it again next year!

All of the proceeds from the Blisters for Sisters TM campaigns go toward the provision of care and services provided to the elderly and sick poor of metro Denver by the professional, lay staff of Dominican Sisters Home Health Agency. Even though each runner has their own story, their own reason to run – all of them share a love for these underserved folks who we help to keep safe, healthy and independent in their own homes.

In 2009, from January through May, we had monthly coaching and rehab training sessions: Maureen Roben was our Coach, a former Olympic Trials finalist in the marathon and coach/ trainer of Run-Strong of Denver; and Lisa Bradford, M.S. P.T. of Ascent Therapy Clinics, physical therapist and strength/conditioning coach. We also had online support via email. They have graciously agreed to help us again for 2010 Blisters for Sisters TM .
